Why Venue Experience Shouldn't Be a Dealbreaker
When choosing a wedding photographer, you might hear that you should hire someone who has photographed at your venue before. While familiarity with a venue can be helpful, it shouldn't be a prerequisite.
Every wedding is different. Lighting, weather, seasons, and timelines can completely change how a venue photographs, even for someone who has worked there countless times.
What matters more is your photographer's ability to adapt, understand lighting, find beautiful compositions, and prepare for the environment they're working in.
A Real Wedding in the Smoky Mountains
I recently photographed a wedding at The Pearl of the Valley in Sevierville, Tennessee, nestled in the Smoky Mountains. It was my first time photographing a wedding at this venue.
Rather than relying on previous experience with the property, I took the time to scout locations for couple portraits and family photographs, paying attention to the surroundings, available light, and potential backdrops.
The result? Beautiful portraits that made use of the venue's natural scenery, including its gorgeous creek.
That experience is a perfect example of why photographing a venue for the first time doesn't have to be a disadvantage.
Choose the Photographer, Not Just the Venue
When searching for your wedding photographer, look at their overall portfolio, consistency, approach to lighting, and ability to photograph different environments.
A photographer who has worked at your venue before may have an advantage in familiarity, but that doesn't automatically make them the right fit for your wedding.
Venue familiarity is a bonus. Skill, preparation, and adaptability are what truly matter.
